Tian Shan Wapiti (Elk)

Tian Shan Wapiti (Elk) is also often referred to as a Maral Stag.  It makes a magnificent trophy, with antlers similar to North American Elk.  They live in rugged, steep and often in heavily timbered terrain.  The largest bull elks are found in the Altai Mountains in the Eastern part of Kazakhstan and Ily Alatau National Park.

ProfitHunt has been guiding Tian Shan Wapiti hunts for over 10 years and hunters have achieved 90% success when pursuing this trophy.

This hunt can be combined with a Roe Deer, Wolf, and a Mid-Asian Ibex.

Getting to the Hunting Area

Arrival into Almaty is normally at midnight by Lufthansa via Frankfurt or by Turkish Airlines via Istanbul. You will be met at the airport by a ProfiHunt Representative, who will assist you through the customs process.

You will then be taken to a hotel and in the morning be driven to your hunting area. Your travel time will be 5 to 6 hrs if you hunt the Altyn Emel National Park, 12 to 14 hrs drive if you go to the Djungarian Alatau area and 2 hours if you hunt the Ily Alatau National Park.

Hunting Camps

Tents, yurts (GER) or hunting cabins are used to accommodate the hunters in these regions. The camps are located in mountain valleys at elevations between 3,000 and 4,000 feet. Camps will accommodate two or three hunters.

Base camps are clean and warm however “modern convinces” are none.  Camps are equipped with stoves and cots and you will have access to showers in base camp.  Each camp has an interpreter and a cook who will prepare home style meals and you will be provided with quality service.  Electricity is supplied by a generator.

Hunting Methods

Bugling in a mature elk is one of the greatest hunting thrills a true hunter will experience. The bugle season will typically run from September 15th thru October 10th. It is not uncommon to hear up to nine Maral calling at the same time. Hunting on horse is done due to the immense amount of country that must be covered. Expect extensive horseback riding; with between 8 to 10 hours a day, coupled with considerable walking.  Some knowledge and experience with horses and ridding is a must. A temporary tented camp can be set up with a specific goal of hunting a particular animal or area.  Elk are generally located on mountains in open sloped areas at elevations between 8,000 to 8,500 feet.  Once a trophy is spotted you will complete your stalk on foot.
