Russia
Altai
Wapiti or Maral (Elk)
Many say that
the Gorno Altai Wapiti’s area is one of the best currently available for a
true wildness hunt. The Russian Altai is in the very center of Asia at the
junction of Siberian taiga, steppes of Kazakhstan and semi-deserts of
Mongolia. The Altai Republic has a very picturesque landscape, and is
referred to as a "Russian Tibet" in the center of Eurasia at the junction of
several states, natural zones and cultural worlds.
This hunt can be
combined with Gorno Altai Ibex, Siberian Roe Deer, Siberian Brown Bear, Musk
Deer, and Wolf.
Getting to the Hunting Area
You will fly
into Moscow and upon arrival you will be met by ProfiHunt’s representative
who will assist you in the customs formalities. You’ll then most likely
spend the evening in a hotel in Moscow. In the morning you will fly four
hours to Barnaul, accompanied by an English speaking ProfitHunt
Representative. Dependent on your hunting area, you will then drive 8 to 12
hours to reach the villages of Tungur or Kosh-Agash which are located less
than 60 miles from the Mongolian boarder.
Hunting Camps
You will
normally hunt out of camps consisting of hunting cabins or tented camps.
They are clean, warm and comfortable but have no modern conveniences.
Base camps are
equipped with cots, showers and electric generators. The Base camps are
located in mountain valleys at elevations between 3,500 to 4,500 feet.
Hunting Methods
During the day
you will travel the upper edges of the mountains while glassing the
hillsides and feeding areas. Due to the immense amount of country that must
be covered to enhance your chance of success, you will be on horseback many
days from 8 to 10 hours, so you should expect extensive horseback riding,
coupled with considerable walking and hiking.
Some knowledge
and experience with horses and ridding is definitely a plus.
Temporary tented
camps are set up with the specific goal of hunting a particular trophy or
area. Stags are generally located on open slopes of mountains at elevations
between 6,000 to 6,500 feet Once the trophy is spotted you will complete
your stalk on foot. Your physical condition is a factor for this hunt.
